Wedding Insurance 101: What It Covers, What It Costs, and Why Every Couple Needs It

You've booked the venue. Paid deposits. Hired vendors. Invited 150 people.

Now imagine this: The venue floods the night before. Your photographer cancels. A guest gets injured. Or the caterer never shows.

Without insurance, every dollar comes out of your pocket. That's why more couples are buying wedding insurance — and why many venues now require it.

What Is Wedding Insurance?

Wedding insurance is short-term event insurance that protects you financially if something unexpected disrupts your big day. It usually includes liability coverage, cancellation coverage, optional liquor liability, and vendor protection.

What Does Wedding Insurance Cover?

General Liability (Most important) — Covers guest injuries, property damage, lawsuits, and legal fees. Example: A guest slips on the dance floor → medical bills + legal costs covered. Most venues require $1M+ limits.

Cancellation or Postponement — Covers severe weather, illness/injury, venue issues, vendor no-shows, and emergencies. Example: The venue closes due to storm damage → reimbursed for deposits.

Liquor Liability — If alcohol is served, you need this. Covers alcohol-related injuries, accidents after the event, and host liability. Even if you're not selling alcohol — serving still creates risk.

How Much Does Wedding Insurance Cost?

Typical: $150–$300 total. That's less than flowers, DJ, or cake — but protects tens of thousands of dollars.

When Should You Buy It?

Buy once deposits are paid and venue is secured. Waiting increases risk.

Common Mistakes Couples Make

Assuming venue covers everything. Skipping liquor liability. Buying last minute. Not adding venue as additional insured.
